If I am honest

I still do not understand you,
O God. In Christ’s name, Amen.

A prayer

I am learning that
for every person who leaves my life
a new one walks in

I am learning that
for every leaf that falls in my life
a clover sprouts

I am learning that
for every beggar I ignore in life
another asks

and that, just maybe,
this is grace.

For Anxiety

God, I feel anxious.
The grip of fearsome things

tightens my chest
and holds my breath.

You calmed Galilee,
comforted your disciples, too.

Steady me, O Lord,
and inhale with me.

Before a Meal

Today and tomorrow,
bless this food.

Today and tomorrow,
bless this wine.

Today and tomorrow,
bless this table.

Today and tomorrow,
bless this home.

For Folks Experiencing Loss at Christmas

Dear God,
There’s an empty chair at the table this year,
an absence in our hearts,
an emptiness in the room.

Things are different this Christmas
and we struggle to comprehend them.
And although things have changed,
You, O Lord, have not, and we thank you.

Remind us that our beloved has a home in your heart
and a seat at your table.
Gift us with memories of our missed one
and knowledge that they are with you this year.

Teach us to depend on family in these seasons
and keep watch over those who have none,
that they might feel your nearness.

Comfort the afflicted and afraid,
as you did the grieving sisters Mary and Martha,
as we mourn with similar hearts.

Enfold us in your gentle arms,
for you are our mother, and we are your children.
Help us hear you in this solitude.

Shield us today
and protect us tomorrow, O God.
Amen.

A Prayer Father’s Day

Blessed is the man
who hears the stories of women,
whose gentleness puts his
neighbors at ease,
whose softness looks like Jesus,
and whose children follow his example.

A Prayer for Mother’s Day

Blessed is the woman
who speaks what is on her mind,
whose loudness gives
her sisters courage,
whose hair hangs short and plain
and whose children follow her example.

A Prayer for the New Year

Eternal God,
You sent Mary on a journey to Egypt
and led Hagar through the desert.
You lit the wilderness way for Moses
and produced manna for his family.

Send us into this new year
with fire to see by, bread to live by,
and family to travel with,
as we follow your voice in the world.

Where you go, O Lord, we will go;
and where we lodge, you will lodge,
for we are your people,
and you are our God.  Amen.

A Toast

May we always have
room at the table
wood for the fire
drink in our cups,
and friends in our home.

In Gratitude for Lesbians

Creator God,
you inspired Vashti to speak her mind
and led Miriam dancing from Egypt.
We thank you for the lesbians in our lives
who, like their ancestors, model truth and bravery.

We pray especially for women
who can never come out,
for whom courage is far away,
and who live without hope.
Look mercifully on them, O God,
and shelter them with tenderness.

We pray for lesbians married to men,
that they might find peace one day;
And we pray for women
whose families love them conditionally
and ask you to be gentle to them.

We offer thanks for the joy of identity,
for the hope of community,
and for the peace of women in love.
In the name of your holy Son,
who loved women,
we pray, amen.
